China's nanotechnology has made significant progress in removing micro-pollutants from drinking water

The reporter learned from the Hefei Institute of Materials Research of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on the 21st that the National Key Research Project of the Ministry of Science and Technology, the chief unit of the Institute of Intelligent Research of the Institute, has achieved the results of the “basic research on removal of micro-pollutants from drinking water using nanotechnology”. The technology of nanomaterials and related processing procedures is of great significance for controlling arsenic, fluorine and other pollution of drinking water sources.

At present, this technology has been used on the spot in some rural areas in China and has made outstanding contributions to improving the drinking water quality of local farmers. This is also the first time that China has used nanomaterials and its handling procedures for drinking water treatment.

It is understood that under the conventional drinking water treatment methods, some of the heavy metals such as micro-pollutants will have obvious residues, and long-term drinking will cause harm to the human body. Therefore, the treatment of micro-pollutants in drinking water is the most challenging frontier issue in the field of drinking water safety.

According to Liu Jinhuai, a researcher at the Institute of Hefei, Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences responsible for this research, dynamic nanomaterials have advantages such as high adsorption efficiency that cannot be matched with conventional materials, and provide new opportunities for solving these key problems.

Researchers established a demonstration base of nanotechnology to remove micro-pollutants in drinking water in Xingwangzhuang Village, Wushijia Town, Toketo County, Hohhot, Inner Mongolia.

The drinking water in Xingwangzhuang Village is mainly from groundwater, and the water quality is very poor. Arsenic is more than 10 times the national standard (10ppb), and the fluoride ion content is close to 3 times the national standard limit (1.0ppm). In addition, the water is pale yellow with a slight odor, and some of the harmful organics are very high.

After nearly one year of hard work, researchers have achieved effective removal of arsenic, fluorine and organic matter from drinking water in Xingwangzhuang Village. The treated drinking water has basically reached the national drinking water hygiene standard (GB5749-2006). Local people of all ethnic groups can finally drink safe drinking water.
