Maintaining furniture is essential to preserve its beauty and longevity. Different types of materials require different care methods, and this guide focuses on how to properly maintain Huanghuali furniture, a prized wood known for its elegance and durability.
1) Start by gently wiping the surface with a soft towel. This helps remove dust and any built-up wax or grime. It's recommended to do this 2-3 times a day for about 2-3 hours each session.
2) Next, use a clean, soft cotton cloth to apply gentle pressure while polishing. After a week, you may notice some color fading on the cloth, which is normal. The surface will gradually become smoother over time.
3) Allow the furniture to rest naturally for a few days. Let it air dry and expose it to the environment so that a thin oxide layer can form on the surface, offering natural protection.
4) Begin using your hands to polish the furniture. Make sure your hands are clean and completely dry before touching the surface. Avoid using sweaty hands as they can leave marks. Focus on the edges and holes, and spend around 30 minutes daily. After one or two weeks, you'll feel a slight stickiness, which indicates the formation of a thin patina.
5) Let the piece sit for a while and allow the patina to harden naturally. This usually takes about a week.
6) Repeat steps 4 and 5 for 5-6 times over the course of three months. You'll start to see a noticeable change in the furniture’s appearance, often revealing a subtle luster.
7) For items with a glass-like shine, be extra careful. If they get dirty, wipe them gently with a slightly damp cotton cloth. After cleaning, let them rest before continuing the polishing process. Pay special attention to the edges and holes. Remember, patience is key—there's no shortcut to achieving a beautiful finish. The process itself brings a sense of satisfaction and spiritual joy.
8) Every three months, consider using Dongmi defensive salt for purification. Mix fine defensive salt with mineral water and place it in a cup or bowl. Put the item on top and write a wish for good luck on the back of the object. This purification can last up to three months.
9) Alternatively, you can use large-grain defensive salt and place the furniture on a plate covered with the salt. This method also works well for purification. However, if you don't include a "Yu Shou Xuan" blessing during the process, the effect will be significantly reduced, lasting only about a month. Authentic "Yu Shou Xuan" items usually have a shrine seal on the back.
