New technology allows droplets to float and emit blue light

Applying a voltage of 50 volts to the droplets of weak hydrochloric acid can form a plasma at the bottom of the suspended droplets and emit blue light.

French researchers have developed a new suspension technology similar to the Leidenfrost phenomenon, using electricity to suspend droplets from a metal plate and letting the gap between the suspended droplets and the plate emit weak blue light, illuminating the above The suspended droplets form a mini-lighting device.

The Leiden Frost phenomenon was discovered by German scientist John Gottlob Leighton Frost in 1756. The water droplets are dripped onto a hot iron plate. When the iron plate is heated to just above 100°C, the water will buzz and boil quickly, but when heated above 280°C, droplets will form between the iron plate and the iron plate. A layer of water vapor, so that the beads suspended and rolling around on the iron plate. In the past, chefs used hot water to test if the wok was hot enough.

According to the report of the Physicist Organization Network on the 12th, a research team led by France’s physicist Seder Rick Perein of the Alternative Energy and Atomic Energy Commission, suspended droplets of electricity with electricity instead of heating. The new device designed by the Perein team can apply current to conductive droplets and quickly capture droplet behavior. They suspended conductive droplets of weak hydrochloric acid above the metal disk and applied voltage to the droplets. When the droplets were gradually brought into contact with the plates, the current formed could decompose the water in the hydrochloric acid solution into hydrogen and oxygen. Once the applied voltage exceeds 50 volts, the droplets rise from the surface of the dish and gradually leave the bottom of the dish to form a suspension phenomenon, and the gap between the droplet and the dish emits weak blue light.

The research team was very surprised and excited about the Blu-ray phenomenon. Perrayin explained that a lower voltage of 50 volts can create a strong electric field in the small gap between the droplet and the metal disk, ionizing the gas in the gap into a high-density plasma, thereby emitting blue light.

The team plans to further analyze the composition of the plasma layer and study the plasma dynamics at the bottom of the droplet during light emission to see if the gas in the gap is the hydrogen or water vapor produced by the electrolyzed water.

The latest research, published in the journal of Applied Physics, is expected to provide a brand-new technology to produce a free-moving micro-plasma device, which will also open up new horizons for basic physics research. (Reporter Nie Cuirong)
