Recycling coffee beans can also be used as fuel for London buses to test water first
Cleantech company bio-bean announced that the company will use recycled coffee beans to fuel some of London's buses. Bio-bean has teamed up with Shell and Argent Energy to develop a new type of biofuel for the London bus fuel chain, which contains some coffee oil. Royal Dutch Shell and bio-bean said that this fuel can be used without any adjustment.
Arthur Kay, founder of bio-bean, said: “This is a great example of how we can think of garbage as an unexploited resource.â€
The team has already produced enough coffee for one year of coffee oil.
The Transport Authority of London stated that they have been reducing carbon emissions through biofuels and have also tried to use the waste oil from the restaurant industry as fuel.
The company said that Londoners drink an average of 2.3 cups of coffee a day and that 200,000 tons of coffee beans are consumed each year.
They collect waste coffee beans from coffee shops, offices, and factories. Each year they collect 1 ton of coffee beans and can emit 6.8 tons of carbon dioxide.
These coffee beans are then dried and extracted and then mixed with other fats and oils to make 20% of the basic ingredients. Afterwards, the base ingredients are mixed with mineral diesel to form B20 biofuel.
This biofuel can be used directly on buses in London without any adjustment.
