Types and Main Components of the Reverse Drive Unit

The reverse drive unit is also known as a reversing gear system, reverse drive mechanism, or a rotary speed reducer. It is widely used in various industries such as aerospace, tower cranes, excavators, construction machinery, satellite receiving systems, and solar energy tracking systems. In recent years, with the rapid development of photovoltaic power generation, its application has become even more widespread.
There are different specification types for the reverse drive units, which are typically categorized based on the approximate raceway diameter of the bearing. Common international designations include WD-080, WD-0130, WD-0170, WD-0223, WD-0343, WD-0419, WD-0478, WD-0625, etc. In domestic naming conventions, they are often expressed in inches (1 inch = 25.4 mm), such as SE3, SE5, SE7, SE9, SE12, SE14, SE17, SE21, and SE25. The "WD" in foreign designations stands for Worm and Drive, while "SE" in domestic names refers to Slewing and Enclose. Although the naming methods differ, the performance and scale of each type remain consistent.
In the solar industry, there is currently no unified standard for classifying the types of reverse drive units used. Most applications are determined based on the area of the solar panels. Commonly, the domestic naming convention is adopted, where SE3 corresponds to a panel area of 3–5 m², SE5 to 6–9 m², SE7 to 10–17 m², SE9 to 18–30 m², SE12 to 31–45 m², SE14 to 46–60 m², SE17 to 61–95 m², SE21 to 96–120 m², and SE25 to 120–160 m². However, this is not an official standard and should be used as a reference only.
The main components of a reverse drive unit include the reverse bearing, worm gear, casting base, and standard parts such as bearings and bolts. In photovoltaic power generation systems, it is usually paired with a DC planetary gear motor or a servo gear motor. In construction machinery, hydraulic motors are commonly used as the power source.
