Glufosinate is a newly developed herbicide by Hearst, which is now a subsidiary of Bayer. It was introduced in the 1980s and has since gained attention as alternatives like glyphosate and paraquat have been phased out due to environmental and health concerns. Since 2012, low-level glyphosate formulations have been completely discontinued, and the use of paraquat has been banned in many regions. As a result, many manufacturers and distributors have turned their focus toward glufosinate.
The herbicide is known for its high efficiency, low toxicity, and rapid degradation in the environment. It is water-based, making it safe and convenient for application. After years of market promotion, glufosinate has gradually gained acceptance. According to data from the China Pesticide Information Network, over 30 companies have registered this product, indicating growing interest in its use.
Lear Chemical Co., Ltd.'s technical team conducted tests and found that glufosinate is highly effective against weeds resistant to glyphosate and paraquat, such as goosegrass and fragrant aconite. This makes it a valuable alternative in areas where traditional herbicides are no longer viable.
"Compared to glyphosate, glufosinate offers better control over certain perennial weeds and does not have systemic effects, making it safer for shallow-rooted crops like soybeans, papaya, and bananas," said Liu Xiaowei, the company's product manager. "In high-value crop fields, it has a stronger market advantage."
Globally, glufosinate is one of the top-selling herbicides, with annual sales exceeding $500 million. It is also the second-largest herbicide used in genetically modified (GM) crops due to its low toxicity, ease of degradation in soil, and safety for plants. Its wide weed control spectrum and reduced risk of drift make it an attractive option for farmers and pesticide companies alike.
"It’s not just about registration; it’s about smooth production!" Liu Xiaowei explained. Compared to well-known herbicides like glyphosate, the production process of glufosinate is more complex. Currently, only a few companies, such as Yongnong Chemical and Lear Chemical, have successfully achieved industrial-scale production.
With increasing demand and limited production capacity, the glufosinate market is becoming more competitive. As regulatory changes continue to shape the agricultural sector, glufosinate is positioned as a key player in the future of sustainable weed management.
