Qi Fengyu Management Method:
January: Focus on cold protection and winter care. Ensure the minimum temperature stays above 5°C. While plants can survive below 5°C, their outer skin may wrinkle and develop dark spots. Water sparingly, stop fertilizing, and provide plenty of sunlight.
February: Continue with the same care as January.
March: Gradually increase temperatures and water supply, while ensuring good indoor ventilation. Repot your plants once a year in spring. Since the root system is shallow, avoid deep pots. A suitable potting mix includes 2 parts humus or peat soil, 1 part garden soil, 3 parts coarse sand, 1 part slag, and a small amount of decomposed organic fertilizer.
April: Begin sowing and propagation. Use shallow containers and disinfect the soil before planting. Cover the seeds lightly and soak the pot in water to hydrate the soil. Place a glass over the container in a bright, shaded area, keeping the temperature between 20-24°C. Germination usually occurs within 8-10 days. Once seedlings emerge, transplant them regularly, keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged. Remove moss from the surface of the pot to prevent it from hindering growth. Avoid direct sunlight. The plant will bloom in spring with yellow flowers, about 4-6 cm in diameter. The fruit is small and olive-shaped; harvest when ripe.
May: Continue sowing and managing seedlings. Provide shade during summer to promote healthy growth. Follow the "dry and wet" principle to avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. Apply liquid fertilizer every 20 days, using a low nitrogen concentration and slightly higher phosphorus and potassium levels.
June: Focus on grafting and propagation. Use robust cactus species like three-point arrows or grass balls as rootstocks. Perform grafting on flat surfaces. After grafting, keep the plants in a well-ventilated, shaded area. Protect the graft site from moisture and rain. After about 10 days, the wound should heal, and the plant will begin to grow normally. Once the grafted plant matures, you can cut it to encourage its own root system, resulting in a beautiful, compact specimen.
July: Same as June.
August: Same as June.
September: As temperatures drop, reduce watering and fertilization to prepare for winter.
October: Move plants indoors for maintenance. Control watering and stop fertilizing, while ensuring they receive ample light.
November: Continue with the same care as October.
December: Same as November.
