When it comes to maintaining SKF bearings, one of the most critical factors is managing heat. Excessive heat can significantly reduce the lifespan and performance of bearings. There are several effective methods for smoothing or lubricating bearings, and each method is suitable for different types of bearings and operating conditions. Proper lubrication not only enhances performance but also ensures the longevity of the bearing.
One common lubrication method is **oil lubrication**, which relies heavily on the viscosity of the oil. Viscosity affects how well the oil flows and forms a protective film between moving parts. For SKF bearings, the ideal viscosity at operating temperature is usually around 12–15 cst. Higher rotational speeds typically require lower viscosity oils, while heavier loads demand higher viscosity to maintain proper lubrication.
Common lubricants used include mechanical oil, high-speed mechanical oil, turbine oil, compacting oil, transformer oil, and cylinder oil. Each has its own application based on specific needs.
There are several lubrication techniques:
- **Oil Bath Lubrication**: This is the most widely used method, especially for low and medium-speed bearings. A portion of the bearing is submerged in an oil reservoir, and as the bearing rotates, oil is carried up and distributed across the components before returning to the reservoir.
- **Drip Lubrication**: This method provides a controlled supply of oil to the bearing. The oil drips at a rate of about one drop every 3–8 seconds. Too much oil can lead to increased temperatures and potential leakage.
- **Circulating Oil Lubrication**: In this method, oil is pumped to the bearing, then filtered and cooled before being reused. This helps dissipate heat and is ideal for high-speed bearings.
- **Spray Lubrication**: Oil is mixed with air and sprayed as a fine mist into the bearing. This method is particularly useful for high-speed and high-temperature applications, as it helps cool the bearing and prevents contamination.
- **High-Pressure Oil Jet Lubrication**: This involves using a nozzle to inject high-pressure oil directly into the bearing. It's commonly used when traditional methods fail to deliver sufficient lubrication at high speeds.
Bearings are essential components in machines, serving as the central support for rotating shafts and controlling motion. Without proper bearings, most machinery would be unable to function. However, many users report that overheating is a common issue when using imported bearings, which can negatively impact performance and service life.
Some of the main causes of bearing overheating include:
1. **Low oil level**: Insufficient lubricant can lead to oil loss through the seal.
2. **Overfilled grease**: Excess grease can cause excessive friction, leading to overheating and oil leakage.
3. **Dry or tight oil seals**: If the oil seal is too dry or the spring is too tight, it can increase resistance and generate heat.
4. **Misaligned or deformed bearing housing**: If the inner hole of the housing is not round or the bearing surface is uneven, it can cause improper fit and increased heat.
5. **Repeated issues with oil seals**: Similar problems may occur if the contact-type oil seal is not maintained properly.
To prevent these issues, regular maintenance and proper lubrication are essential. Understanding the correct lubrication method for your SKF bearings can make a significant difference in their performance and durability.
