As a non-selective herbicide, glyphosate leaves no residue and is highly effective against perennial root weeds. It is widely used in agricultural fields such as rubber plantations, mulberry farms, tea gardens, orchards, and sugarcane fields.
The mechanism of action involves inhibiting the enzyme 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS), which is critical in the shikimate pathway. By blocking this pathway, glyphosate prevents the synthesis of aromatic amino acids—phenylalanine, tyrosine, and tryptophan—thereby disrupting protein synthesis and leading to plant death. Once absorbed through the stems and leaves, glyphosate is translocated throughout the plant, making it effective against over 40 families of both monocotyledonous and dicotyledonous plants, including annuals, perennials, herbs, and shrubs.
Moreover, glyphosate becomes inactive when it binds with metal ions such as iron and aluminum. It does not harm seeds or soil microorganisms, making it a relatively safe option for use in agricultural environments.
