Six measures to promote early maturing of summer maize

Summer maize (2340, -4.00, -0.17%) has a short growth period and can mature normally. However, it requires some specific pre-maturing techniques to ensure optimal yield and quality.

   1. Foliar fertilization During the mid-growth stage of corn, applying a foliar spray containing 0.3% potassium dihydrogen phosphate along with zinc and boron micro-fertilizers can significantly enhance kernel development, improve the plant’s resistance to stress, and promote early maturity. This technique helps in maximizing the productivity of summer maize.

   2. Pest and disease control is crucial to protect late-stage corn from damage caused by pests such as aphids and corn borers, as well as diseases like brown spot and large leaf spot. By managing these threats, farmers can increase light energy utilization and support the efficient accumulation of nutrients in the crop. Regular monitoring and timely intervention are essential for maintaining healthy crops.

   3. Tassel removal is an effective practice that involves removing male flowers (tassels) to redirect the plant's energy towards ear development. This process also improves sunlight exposure by reducing shading. The best time to perform tassel removal is when the tassel is just emerging, allowing for easy hand removal. After pollination, all remaining tassels should be removed to maximize grain development.

   4. Removing weak or diseased plants helps conserve water and nutrients, while improving air circulation and light penetration. This practice ensures that only the healthiest plants continue to grow, leading to better overall yield and quality.

   5. Leaf pruning at the end of the milk stage can help accelerate maturation. By gently cutting back the leaves around the ears, the kernels receive more direct sunlight, which promotes nutrient transformation and dehydration. This method can lead to earlier harvests, typically about 7 to 8 days ahead of schedule.

   6. Harvesting at the wax stage ensures that the corn is ready for storage. At this stage, the roots are carefully removed, and the stalks are transported to a shaded area. Storing them under trees or in the shade, with occasional watering, helps maintain green leaf function. This process supports the transfer of nutrients from the leaves to the grains, increasing grain weight. The storage pile should not be too large and should not last longer than 15 to 20 days for optimal results.
