As a move to change the way US military ships are built, Huntington Ingalls Industries (HHI) has announced a partnership with 3D Systems, a professional 3D printing technology company.
It is reported that HHI's shipyard Newport News Shipbuilding will jointly develop additive manufacturing technology with 3D Systems, hoping to accelerate the use of metal 3D printing technology to produce parts for US Navy ships. As part of the collaboration, Newport News Shipbuilding will install the ProX DMP 320 high-performance metal additive manufacturing system, which is capable of manufacturing three-dimensional marine alloy parts for castings or other assembled parts such as valves, housings and brackets. .
The Newport News shipyard is the largest private shipyard in the United States and a US aircraft carrier builder. It is currently undergoing major technological reforms to support the future quality and certification of the US Navy with advanced manufacturing techniques to better build the next generation of warships. . Through collaborative 3D printing technology, Newport News Shipbuilding's shipbuilding process will shift from traditional shipbuilding to additive manufacturing, which improves part accuracy, reduces waste, improves shipbuilding efficiency and lowers construction costs.
Charles Southall, vice president of engineering and design at Newport News Shipbuilding, stated, “We have been building nuclear-powered ships since the 1950s. 3D printing is a game-changing technology for the shipbuilding industry, along with our ongoing digital shipbuilding technology. Changing our design standards will be one of the most significant technological innovations in the shipbuilding industry."
