The total output value of low-voltage electrical appliances may exceed 40 billion yuan in the future

In the fast-paced development of China's low-voltage electrical industry, two key areas deserve special attention: product quality assurance and the transformation of low-voltage electrical products. Companies like Zhengtai and Delixi have set excellent examples in these fields. Recently, Chen Junyu, Secretary General of the Zhejiang Electric Industry Association, shared these insights during an interview with a reporter from China Electric Power.
User needs remain at the core of product development. In 2012, the total profit of China’s low-voltage electrical industry reached approximately 4.4 billion yuan, marking a 7.32% year-on-year growth. At the same time, the total import and export volume reached around 5.509 billion U.S. dollars, reflecting a 5.33% increase. As modern power companies increasingly rely on electronic computer monitoring systems, they demand high-performance, intelligent low-voltage circuit breakers capable of functions such as protection, monitoring, testing, self-diagnosis, and display.
Therefore, the evolution of the low-voltage electrical appliance industry must align with the broader manufacturing sector. The shift toward system-level intelligence is becoming a major trend, with growing technology demands extending into smart grids, electric vehicles, and micro-grids. However, real-world applications often require practical solutions that address specific user challenges.
As a leading smart electrical supplier, Zhengtai focuses not only on individual component intelligence but also on system-level integration. When designing new products, the company takes into account the actual needs of various industries, including architectural design institutes, power supply companies, metallurgy, chemical engineering, and oil fields. For example, one architectural institute requested an earth leakage circuit breaker that only provides an alarm without tripping, to avoid power loss during fire emergencies. Zhengtai responded by developing a tailored solution that meets this unique need.
This demonstrates how user feedback plays a critical role in product development. Companies gather customer opinions through service centers or after-sales support, using this information to better understand user requirements and refine product positioning in terms of features, pricing, and service.
The need for product upgrades is evident. After more than half a century of growth, China’s low-voltage electrical industry has established a relatively complete industrial system, with an output value of about 20 billion yuan and over 2,000 manufacturers employing more than 400,000 people. Despite the industry's expansion, competition among small and medium enterprises remains intense, especially in the mid- and low-end markets.
Currently, most domestic low-voltage electrical products are concentrated in the middle and lower segments, while high-end products still face strong foreign competition. According to Chen Junxi from China Power News, the first and second generations of low-voltage appliances suffer from poor performance and low profitability, while third-generation models often fail to meet user expectations, such as having long overcurrent protection times and lacking selective protection in distribution systems.
To meet evolving market demands, the development of a new generation of low-voltage electrical products is essential. These should be characterized by independent intellectual property, personalization, and distinct features. Homogeneous products risk falling into price wars, which erode profits.
In recent years, the domestic low-voltage electrical market has seen rapid growth, even amid rising raw material and labor costs. In 2012, the industry achieved a 10% increase in output and a 15% rise in total value. Industry experts predict that the total output will reach 40 billion yuan within the next four years.
With the advancement of smart grid projects and new energy initiatives, the low-voltage electrical industry is entering a phase of accelerated growth. Urbanization and the push for smart distribution networks are creating new opportunities. Intelligent power distribution and control systems are expected to see significant development.
As production technologies evolve, the next generation of intelligent, modular, and communicable low-voltage electrical products will become mainstream. Market share for mid- and high-end products is expected to grow further. Under the backdrop of industrial restructuring and the transition to a low-carbon economy, energy-efficient and high-performance products will gain more traction.
Additionally, the development of new energy sources is opening up new frontiers for the intelligentization of low-voltage electrical equipment. Products are now expanding into photovoltaic inverters, new energy control systems, distributed energy, energy storage, and DC switchgear. This area represents a promising growth point for the industry, offering comprehensive solutions and new business opportunities.
