Graphene photosensitive element developed successfully

Abstract While graphene has long been known for its incredible properties, it's still surprising to see how versatile this material can be. From paint and environmental solutions to audio technology, graphene seems to find a place in nearly every industry. This time, it’s making waves in the world of photography.

Wang Qijie, an assistant professor at Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, and his research team have developed a groundbreaking graphene-based sensor. This new sensor is capable of detecting a wide range of light wavelengths, capturing and retaining light-generated electrons for significantly longer than traditional sensors. It can capture light up to 1000 times more effectively than conventional sensors and dissipates energy 10 times less.



What makes this sensor even more impressive is its ability to produce sharper images with less light. Additionally, it’s expected to cost just one-fifth of current CMOS or CCD sensors, making it a highly attractive option for manufacturers.

According to Professor Wang, “Our goal was to ensure that this technology could be integrated into existing production methods. That means the industry can continue using the CMOS process, which is already widely adopted in electronics manufacturing. This allows for a smooth transition, where manufacturers can easily replace traditional materials with our graphene-based sensors.”

The potential applications of this sensor are vast, ranging from infrared imaging and high-speed photography to satellite mapping and beyond. The research team is now working on commercializing the technology, aiming to bring this innovation to market soon. With its combination of performance, affordability, and compatibility, this graphene sensor could revolutionize the future of imaging technology.
