Hardware Industry Steadily Increases Production Capacity

Hardware industry grows steadily The Chinese hardware industry has experienced steady growth over the years. In the past, the overall level of the industry was relatively low, with many small and medium-sized enterprises operating out of basic workshops. However, in recent years, significant changes have taken place. One major development is the improvement in personnel quality—today, leaders in the sector, such as those overseeing China Hardware City, the country’s largest hardware market under construction in Beijing, are often highly educated individuals, including Ph.D.s and postdoctoral researchers. Another key change is the advancement in production processes and management systems. Companies like Great Wall Precision have reached high standards in both areas, demonstrating a shift toward more professional and efficient operations. Despite this progress, the domestic production process remains uneven, with many foreign companies using China as a manufacturing base. This has led to increased competition and also brought advanced technologies and management practices into the local market. Currently, the Chinese hardware industry is in an upgrading phase, moving from mid-to-low-end products to higher-value, high-end manufacturing. This transition is beneficial for long-term development, as it allows for the transfer of advanced foreign production methods and materials. Traditional hardware sectors, such as tools, construction hardware, and decoration hardware, are seeing rapid innovation. Manual, hydraulic, and power tools are developing quickly, while the replacement cycle for construction and decorative hardware is accelerating. There is also strong demand for hardware components and parts. For example, a small processing plant in Handan, Hebei, has grown significantly over the past decade, with its nationwide sales force exceeding 100,000 people. As a result, China has become the world's largest producer of hardware products, with consistent annual export growth. In 2023, the total export value of hardware products surpassed $5 billion, ranking third among light industries globally. The largest export categories include tools, valued at $5.34 billion, followed by construction hardware at $4.34 billion, taps at $2.23 billion, and locks at $680 million. Major export destinations include the U.S., Japan, Europe, and South Korea. The industry is growing at around 8% annually, and with improved manufacturing capabilities and expanded production capacity, it is expected to maintain a growth rate of over 10% per year for the next five years. In the first ten months of this year alone, the import and export volume of hardware and electromechanical products exceeded $500 billion, with a trade surplus of $7.06 billion—accounting for 64% of the national trade surplus during the same period. This highlights the industry's crucial role in China’s broader economic landscape.
