The maximum speed at which NSK bearings can operate is influenced by several key factors. These include the structural integrity and design of the cage, the smoothness of the cage guide surfaces, the centrifugal and reversing forces acting on the rolling elements, and the precision of the manufacturing process. Additionally, other elements such as seals in sealed bearings and the type of lubricant used can also affect the bearing's performance at high speeds.
Laboratory testing and real-world applications have shown that maintaining a safe operating temperature for bearings at high speeds can be costly and technically challenging. As a result, there is a practical upper limit to how fast NSK bearings can run under normal conditions.
The limit speeds listed in the product specifications are typically based on standard cage designs. If higher speeds are required, it may be necessary to enhance certain limiting factors—such as improving rotational accuracy, optimizing cage design, ensuring smoother surface finishes, and implementing better cooling methods. For detailed guidance, it is recommended to consult with an expert or NSK’s technical support team.
In cases where grease is used as a lubricant, additional considerations come into play. The condition of the cage guide surfaces and the shear resistance of the grease are important factors. These characteristics depend largely on the base oil and thickener used in the grease formulation. Some open ball bearings, due to their low internal friction, may have reference speeds that exceed their actual limit speed. In such situations, it's essential to compare the calculated limit speed with the rated speed and use the lower value for safe operation.
It's also important to note that NSK bearings must operate under a minimum load when running at high speeds. This ensures proper lubrication and prevents premature wear or failure.
