Miscanthus can be a new generation energy crop

The Chinese Academy of Sciences' research project “Research, Development and High-efficiency Sustainable Utilization of Miscanthus” has achieved initial results. An article published by the researchers in “Global Change Biological Student Material Energy” recently revealed that the perennial herb Miscanthus has rich genetic variability. With strong adaptability, it can cultivate high-yield energy crops that are cold-tolerant, drought-tolerant and poor-tolerant, or it can replace soybean crops such as soybean, corn and wheat to become a new-generation energy crop.

One of the researchers participating in the project, Li Jianqiang, a researcher at the Wuhan Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, said that after three years of research, the research team transplanted three species of Miscanthus to regions such as Gansu and Inner Mongolia. The results showed that the Miscanthus biomass grown in these two regions was higher than the original. The area in the middle reaches of the Yangtze River is even higher. This shows that Miscanthus has rich genetic variability and strong environmental adaptability.

"Miscanthus has many advantages as a bio-energy crop, and has not found any defects for the time being. It is the best choice for second-generation energy crops." Li Jianqiang said that Miscanthus has a large biomass, strong environmental adaptability, and can be arid through artificial domestication. , barren and not suitable for food production of marginal land planted; and Miscanthus high economical, planted once, can be harvested for many years; Miscanthus also developed underground stem, can be asexual reproduction, soil conservation and sand fixation effect is very good.

According to reports, the first generation of energy crops is mainly corn, wheat, sugar cane, soybeans, rape, and other food and cash crops. Because Miscanthus can produce high biomass in a more drier and colder environment than it naturally grows, it becomes the leader in second-generation energy crops.

Li Jianqiang said that researchers all over the world are currently exploring the second generation of energy crops, basically focusing on perennial herbs and fast-growing trees. Miscanthus as a second-generation energy crop research, has entered the domestication stage, that is, through human intervention, breeding more drought-resistant, cold-resistant, salt and other properties of germplasm. From the current research results, this process should not be very long.

Miscanthus is a poaceae belonging to angiosperm in taxonomy. There are about 14 wild species in the world, mostly distributed in Asia, and a small amount produced in Africa. China has 7 species, including the highest yield of biomass, and is the country with the richest natural resources of Miscanthus.

Mining And Powder

In the field of energy power, the improvement of efficiency and the extension of life span have very demanding requirements on material performance and structural design. Silicon carbide ceramic materials outperform most metallic materials in terms of specific stiffness, thermal shock resistance, friction and wear resistance, and thermal conductivity, but are limited by the difficulty of processing ceramic materials, which prevents their large-scale application.
FLK uses additive manufacturing technology to achieve a breakthrough in the manufacture of integrated complex components made of silicon carbide ceramics.
High strength, high rigidity, high stiffness, light density 280-3.05gcm3, low energy consumption, good thermal shock resistance, small coefficient of thermal expansion, 3D printed silicon carbide ceramic parts can extend its service life by more than 1 times than metal parts, reduce operating energy consumption, and meet the extreme working conditions applications.
