Plug and socket beware of "soil pollution"

In a typical home, it's common to see kitchen sockets covered in oil and grease from years of exposure to cooking fumes. The power cord remains untouched for long periods, accumulating dirt and grime. Unused electrical plugs hang loosely, coated in dust. These are all signs of neglect—things people often overlook, thinking they don’t pose any real danger. However, what may seem harmless can actually be a hidden risk.
When sockets and plugs aren't cleaned regularly, dust, hair, and other debris can build up between the metal contacts. If this buildup comes into contact with moisture, it can act as a conductor, creating an unintended electrical path. This is known as "contamination conduction." Over time, this can lead to poor electrical contact, overheating, and even damage to the insulating materials of the plug or socket. In extreme cases, it could result in a short circuit and potentially start a fire.
According to data from 2012, Jiaxing City experienced 46 electrical fires, with 30 of them linked to electrical wiring or equipment failures—accounting for 65% of all incidents. Many of these were traced back to faulty or dirty plugs and sockets.
To prevent such dangers, fire departments advise the public to keep sockets and plugs clean, especially in dry environments. Use a dry cloth to wipe them regularly. In high-moisture areas like bathrooms, kitchens, and toilets, consider using waterproof socket covers. It’s also important to vacuum or shake out dust from power boards periodically. When appliances are not in use, cover them with a dust cover and make sure to protect their plugs as well. Unused power strips should be stored in a cabinet or safe location to avoid dust accumulation. Leaving plugs unplugged when not in use not only saves energy but also enhances safety.
Taking these simple steps can significantly reduce the risk of electrical accidents and keep your home safer.
