Lock company attaches importance to patent protection

A recent legal case involving Wenzhou Universal Lock Co., Ltd. has concluded with a favorable outcome for the company. The dispute centered around the unauthorized use of the design of one of their motorcycle locks, and after court mediation, the defendant agreed to cease production and sales of infringing products. This resolution highlights the growing importance of intellectual property protection in China’s competitive lock industry. Wenzhou, often referred to as the "Lock Capital" of China, is home to some of the country’s most well-known lock manufacturers. From 2012 to 2015, companies like Zhejiang Zhongli Group, Wenzhou Universal Lock, Wenzhou Tianyu Industry & Trade Group, and Baodeli Industry were consistently ranked among the top ten lock producers in the nation. However, as competition intensifies, many firms rely on low-cost production rather than innovation. This has led to widespread imitation and plagiarism within the industry, making it difficult for original designers to protect their work. Wenzhou Universal Lock has taken significant steps to safeguard its intellectual property. The company has registered trademarks in seven countries and exports its products to over 30 regions, including the EU, the U.S., and Japan. It holds a total of 162 national patents, comprising eight invention patents and 154 utility model patents. Zhao Fang, an engineer at the company, noted that design infringement has been a recurring issue. Previously, the company was hesitant to take action due to the time-consuming process of gathering evidence and filing lawsuits. But in recent years, they have become more proactive in defending their rights. Li Guorong, Secretary-General of the Wenzhou Hardware Industry Association, emphasized that the region is home to over 400 lock manufacturers, with more than 100 operating at a large scale. However, most are small or micro-enterprises with limited resources and innovation capabilities. As a result, product imitation remains a common challenge. The recent victory by Wenzhou Universal Lock serves as an encouraging example for other companies to invest in research and development and to actively protect their intellectual property. By doing so, Wenzhou’s lock industry can continue to grow stronger and gain greater recognition globally.
