Scientists discover new use of cotton waste: used to make biodegradable

When a cotton ginning machine is used to strip cotton fibers from cotton seeds, a large amount of cotton seed wool is generated as waste. At present, most cottonseeds are only burned or put into landfills. However, due to a recent study conducted in Australia, it will soon be converted into biodegradable plastic.

According to Dr. Maryam Naebe of Deakin University, about 32 million tons of cotton seed velvet is produced each year, and about one-third of them will be discarded. Her team members hope to reduce waste while providing cotton farmers with an additional source of income and producing "sustainable alternatives to harmful synthetic plastics."

This prompted them to develop a system in which cheap, environmentally friendly chemicals are used to dissolve cottonseed fibers and other waste. The resulting liquid organic polymer is then used to prepare plastic films, the samples of which are shown in the figure below.

The material is harmlessly biodegradable after being placed on the ground, and can be used in the cotton plantation industry, such as bale wrap or packing seeds and fertilizers. It may even become part of a full-cycle agricultural process.

"Bioplastics can be biodegraded and turned into soil, which is then used to grow cotton. Cottonseed waste is generated during the ginning process, and then reused for bioplastics," Naebe said. According to reports, compared with other similar petroleum-based products, plastic film manufacturing costs are lower.

The research is part of a project led by PhD candidate Abu Naser Md Ahsanul Haque and associate researcher Dr. Rechana Remadevi. They are now studying applying the same technology to organic waste and plant materials such as lemongrass, ***, almond shells, wheat straw, wood sawdust and wood shavings.

Scientists from the National University of Singapore have recently discovered a use for cotton waste, which is converted into insulating and absorbent aerogels.
