Toilet bowl triggers price war

As the year progresses, the home building materials market has entered its traditional off-season following the bustling post-holiday period. Amidst this quiet phase, the water-saving toilet segment has remained surprisingly active. After visiting major home stores in Guangzhou, a reporter found that due to the implementation of new national standards, water-saving toilets have sparked a surge in sales.
**A Price War in the Toilet Market**
"General models are at least 70% off, and some are even 30% discounted, with free installation included," said a store employee in Tianhe, Guangzhou. Following the New Year holidays, many toilet prices have remained at promotional levels, giving consumers more value for their money.
In one Guangzhou store, a fourth-generation water-saving toilet originally priced at around 2,000 yuan was sold for just 600 yuan this month. With such attractive pricing, it's no surprise that consumer interest has been high. A Kohler representative shared that a special water-saving model sold 30 units per month. Similarly, staff from Dongpeng and TOTO reported strong monthly sales, suggesting that the price cuts are having a real impact on the market.
However, a domestic brand manager noted that the replacement of water-saving toilets has been somewhat unexpected. "On one hand, the depressed housing market needs new product stimulation, but consumer demand is limited, leading to product overstock. On the other hand, many people misunderstand environmental protection as simply buying new products, not understanding the actual benefits of water-saving technology."
During the investigation, the reporter also noticed that many buyers were drawn by the low prices, but lacked clear knowledge about the features, quality, and standards of these toilets. Most relied on personal impressions rather than technical details.
**Why Are Water-Saving Toilets Shrinking?**
According to a NetEase home survey, toilets with a flush volume of 6 liters or more have already left the market. In Guangzhou, the current mainstream is 6L or less. Industry sources explained that since July last year, new national standards for sanitary ware have taken effect, forcing older 8L and 9L models out of the market. Now, all available water-saving toilets in Guangzhou are under 6L, with some even as low as 2.7L.
Toilets account for up to 60–70% of household water use, and flushing alone makes up over a third of total water consumption. Reducing flush volume can significantly cut daily usage. Coupled with rising water prices, water-saving toilets have become highly popular.
Currently, 3L/6L jet siphon type water-saving toilets range from 900 to 7,000 yuan for top domestic brands, while imported brands are more expensive. However, domestic products often match or even exceed imported ones in quality, with better after-sales service and higher sales volumes.
**Not All Water-Saving Toilets Are Truly Efficient**
An industry expert warned that not all water-saving toilets are effective. Some models use very little water per flush but fail to clean properly, requiring multiple flushes—turning "water saving" into "water waste."
**Practicality Over Cost-Performance**
Experts advise consumers to prioritize flushing performance over water-saving claims. A qualified water-saving toilet should use at least 6L to ensure proper drainage. Toilets with less than 6L may compromise cleaning efficiency.
China does not advocate extreme water conservation, but instead promotes smart technology that achieves both high performance and water savings. Consumers shouldn’t be tempted by overly water-efficient products that sacrifice usability or cost too much.
When choosing a toilet, practicality and cost-performance are key. For example, Lee, who recently planned a home renovation, emphasized the importance of a quiet flush. Another young professional, newly employed, valued design above all.
**How to Choose a Quality Toilet**
Beyond buying from reputable stores, consumers should know how to assess quality. Experts suggest checking four aspects:
1. **Ceramic Body**: Look for high-quality firing and low water absorption to avoid discoloration over time.
2. **Glaze**: High-quality antibacterial glaze is smooth and easy to clean.
3. **Water System**: A good water system ensures strong flushing and long-term durability.
4. **On-Site Testing**: Try the toilet in-store to experience its flushing performance firsthand.
By being informed and careful, consumers can make smarter choices when selecting a water-saving toilet that meets both their needs and budget.
