As one of the key events at the third Suzhou Expo, the China Furniture Original Design Competition was officially launched yesterday. For many furniture manufacturers, this competition aims to draw attention to a critical issue: "Why does Chinese furniture often lack original design?" Through the competition and exhibition of award-winning works, it highlights the immense potential of original design in breaking through the industry's development bottlenecks.

**How Can a Big Furniture Country Become a Powerful One?**
In the early 1970s, Likou became a hub for furniture production and trade by producing and selling sofas and metal furniture. By 1992, it had developed into the largest furniture distribution center in East China, with the famous "Likou Furniture City" slogan gaining widespread recognition. Over time, it became a major player in the industry, attracting thousands of businesses from across the country and achieving annual sales of over 20 billion yuan.
However, as the industry grew, a concerning trend emerged: a lack of originality and widespread imitation. Many products look similar, leading to intense price competition and numerous disputes. A well-known furniture manufacturer expressed concern, stating that copying has become the norm, and without original design, the industry struggles to move forward.
To foreign consumers, Chinese furniture is often seen as synonymous with "cheap goods." Despite high output, the industry hasn't achieved a qualitative leap. In 2011, China led the world in the production of 220 types of industrial products, but most were low-end. The label of "low-tech and low value" still clings to Chinese manufacturing, making original design a crucial factor in enhancing added value.
**Original Design Must Start with Changing Mindsets**
In Likou, out of about 5,000 companies with over 10 million yuan in annual output, fewer than 100 have original design capabilities. Many entrepreneurs still believe that without design, they can still get orders. This mindset hinders innovation and progress.
With the rise of online sales and changing consumer preferences, especially among the post-70s and post-80s generations, traditional showroom models are struggling. These new consumers seek not just functionality and comfort, but also style, personality, and adaptability to new business models—areas where Likou currently lags behind.
**It’s Urgent to Build a Creative Design Platform**
The third Suzhou Chuangbo Expo emphasizes cultural creativity and original design. The China Furniture Original Design Competition aligns perfectly with this vision. As the Suzhou furniture industry faces a development bottleneck, the event aims to guide enterprises toward transformation.
The expo hopes to raise awareness of original design through exhibitions and awards, encouraging collaboration between companies and the expo. It aims to foster a consensus on the importance of innovation and creativity.
A healthy market needs constant innovation, which drives economic upgrading. However, Chinese enterprises invest less than 1% of revenue in R&D, far below the 2.5%–4% in developed countries. Developing original products requires large teams and long processes, making them expensive and difficult for many companies to afford.
To address this, Wenchuanglian Home Branch calls for government support in building a creative design center and a comprehensive service platform for home design copyright. Suzhou, known as the birthplace of Ming-style furniture, has a rich heritage and strong economy. It should create a platform for designers, companies, and talent to collaborate, bridging the gap between traditional and modern furniture.
Professor Qin Huaiyu, deputy director of the Industrial Design Department at the Suzhou Arts and Crafts Academy, supports the creation of a comprehensive copyright service platform. He believes that investing in innovative design and developing internal capabilities will help produce more original products, boosting the industry's copyright status. To achieve this, the focus must be on cultivating talent and building R&D teams for home design and innovation.
