Misunderstanding 2: No smell in the workshop means no need for PPE

Many harmful substances, such as certain gases and chemicals, are odorless or colorless, making them difficult to detect by senses alone. Even if a substance has a smell, individual differences in sensory perception can make it unreliable. Relying solely on your sense of smell can be dangerous and may result in exposure to toxic substances without realizing it.

Misunderstanding 3: Gauze masks protect against dust

Gauze masks are not suitable for dust protection. These masks are typically made for comfort and breathability, especially in hot weather. However, they do not have the necessary filtration efficiency to block fine dust particles that can cause lung diseases like pneumoconiosis. For effective dust protection, specialized N95 or P100 respirators are recommended.

Misunderstanding 4: Medical masks protect against poison

Medical masks are designed to prevent the spread of germs through respiratory droplets, but they are not meant for filtering out toxic gases. When dealing with chemical hazards, it's essential to use the right type of respirator. For example, activated carbon masks are effective against volatile organic compounds, while full-face respirators may be needed for more hazardous environments.

Myth 5: Dust masks can be washed and reused

Dust masks are not meant to be washed. The filters in these masks are often made from electrostatically charged non-woven materials that trap fine particles. Washing them can damage the structure of the filter, reduce its effectiveness, and even create small holes that let harmful particles through. Reusing a washed mask can significantly increase the risk of inhaling dangerous dust and toxins.
