NEG develops bendable solar cell glass with a thickness of only 0.1mm

As the world's third-largest manufacturer of glass substrates for liquid crystal displays, NEG (Nippon Electric Glass) has introduced a groundbreaking glass product tailored for next-generation solar cells—specifically, Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells (DSSCs). This innovative glass is incredibly thin, measuring just 0.1mm in thickness, and boasts remarkable heat resistance, remaining stable even at temperatures as high as 500°C. NEG is set to launch this product in 2014, marking a significant step forward in solar technology.

Several major companies, including Sony and Nissha, are already actively researching and developing DSSCs that can efficiently generate electricity using low-intensity indoor light. These advancements are expected to lead to mass production within the next 1-2 years, signaling a potential shift in how we power small electronic devices.

The glass developed by NEG serves as a protective cover for the surface of solar cells, with a transparent conductive film applied to its ultra-thin surface. Compared to conventional materials, this new glass is approximately 1/10th the thickness and weight, making it significantly lighter and more compact. Moreover, its flexibility opens up new possibilities for producing flexible solar cell products, which could be used in a variety of unconventional applications, such as curved surfaces or wearable electronics.

This innovation not only enhances the efficiency and versatility of solar technology but also paves the way for more sustainable and adaptable energy solutions in the future.
