The world's third-largest manufacturer of glass substrates for liquid crystals, NEG (Nippon Electric Glass), has introduced a groundbreaking glass product designed specifically for next-generation solar cells—dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs). This ultra-thin glass measures just 0.1mm in thickness and boasts remarkable heat resistance, remaining stable even at temperatures as high as 500°C. NEG plans to launch the product commercially in 2014, marking a significant step forward in solar technology.
Recent reports indicate that major companies like Sony and Nissha are actively exploring DSSC applications that can generate electricity from low indoor light. These developments suggest that mass production of such systems could begin within the next 1-2 years, opening up new possibilities for energy harvesting in everyday environments.
The glass developed by NEG serves as a protective cover for solar cell surfaces and features a transparent conductive film applied on its ultra-thin 0.1mm substrate. Compared to conventional materials, this innovation is not only significantly thinner but also much lighter—approximately 1/10 the size and weight. More importantly, its exceptional flexibility makes it ideal for producing flexible solar cell products, which could be integrated into a wide range of surfaces and devices.
This advancement highlights NEG’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of glass technology and supporting the growing demand for efficient, versatile, and sustainable energy solutions. As the renewable energy sector continues to evolve, innovations like these will play a crucial role in shaping the future of solar power.
