The Guangzhou Coast Defense Force has successfully implemented a solar photovoltaic power system that has been running smoothly for over a month without any issues. This marks a major turning point for the company, which has struggled with electricity shortages for decades. According to officials from the Logistics Department of the Guangdong Military Region, the newly installed solar power stations on remote islands such as Nanxun, Beijian, and Pole have enabled all provincial military region islands to finally break free from the long-standing challenges of electricity supply.
Most of the coastal defense units under this military region are located on islands far from the mainland. In the past, these units relied heavily on diesel generators to meet their power needs, but they could only operate for a few hours each day. As a result, modern equipment like televisions and refrigerators were rarely used. Additionally, the fuel required for the generators had to be transported by boat, making it difficult to maintain consistent power during typhoon season or in rough sea conditions. When vessels couldn't reach the islands, the generators would sit idle, becoming nothing more than decorative items.
Over the past two years, the provincial military region has taken several initiatives to bring in grid power and install wind turbines on some eligible islands. However, after careful assessments of the natural conditions on remote islands like Nanxun, they decided to go with solar photovoltaic systems. These were installed following thorough planning and testing, and the solar power plants were completed on time by the end of last year.
Now, the islands are brightly lit, and the morale of the troops has significantly improved. During a recent visit, the reporter observed the screen of the remote defense video surveillance system at Haiphong, where live footage was being transmitted clearly. The soldiers stood watchful and alert, safeguarding the country's border with dedication and pride.
