Researchers at the Non-Profit Photonics Science Research Institute, ICFO, have made a groundbreaking advancement in the field of solar technology. They've developed a new type of organic solar cell that is not only highly efficient but also flexible, ultra-thin, and nearly transparent. Organic photovoltaic cells (OPVs), often referred to as plastic solar cells, are made from organic conductive polymers that can convert sunlight into electricity. While they may not yet match the efficiency of traditional silicon-based solar panels, their unique properties—lightweight, flexible, and suitable for indirect light absorption—make them ideal for specific applications. One of the key challenges with OPVs is achieving transparency without sacrificing performance. When these cells operate at maximum efficiency, they tend to be opaque. However, scientists can opt to reduce efficiency in favor of translucency by using thinner metal electrodes. Now, ICFO has taken this concept a step further. Their latest design features an organic solar cell that is almost indistinguishable from regular glass, yet it maintains an efficiency of 5.6%. This impressive result was achieved by embedding light crystals within the panel, which help enhance the absorption of infrared and ultraviolet light. Although this efficiency is still lower than that of standard OPVs, it represents a significant leap forward in the pursuit of truly transparent solar technology. The potential applications for this technology are vast. These solar cells could be seamlessly integrated into windows, smart devices, and even curved surfaces. Their transparency and adaptability make them especially promising for building-integrated photovoltaics (BIPV). Moreover, by adjusting the structure of the photonic crystals, the color of the solar cells can be customized to suit different aesthetic needs. ICFO researchers are now focused on improving the performance, durability, and stability of these cells. Professor Jordi Martorell, the lead researcher, shared his vision: "In the near future, we aim to achieve both extremely high efficiency and transparency, making this technology viable for use in monitors, tablets, and smartphones." This exciting development was recently published in the prestigious journal *Nature Photonics*, highlighting its significance in the evolving landscape of renewable energy and smart materials.
