Mosaic formation reasons

Let's take RGB as an example. RGB stands for Red, Green, and Blue. Each of these colors has an intensity value ranging from 0 to 255. The higher the number, the brighter the color. For instance, pure red is created with an R value of 255, G of 0, and B of 0. When colored light mixes with white light, it becomes lighter and less intense. If blue light combines with white light, the result is a softer, lighter shade of blue. This means that different combinations of R, G, and B values can create a wide range of colors.

In digital imaging, a picture consists of many tiny colored pixels. These pixels are so small and densely packed that our eyes perceive them as a smooth image. To create a mosaic effect, a small area (usually a square or rectangle) is selected. Within this area, the R, G, and B values of all the pixels are summed up and then averaged. The resulting average values for R, G, and B form a new color, which is then painted over the entire selected area. This process is repeated across the image, creating the characteristic blocky appearance of a mosaic.

Mosaic, in architectural terms, refers to the use of small tiles—often made of ceramic or glass—to create decorative patterns. It is a traditional art form that has been used for centuries. Mosaics were commonly found in ancient temples, churches, and palaces, especially during the Byzantine era, where they were used to decorate walls and ceilings. Stained glass in churches is a related art form, using colored glass to create beautiful images when light passes through them.

The word "mosaic" comes from the Latin term "mosaicus," meaning "small stone." Originally, people used pebbles, shells, and broken tiles to create intricate designs on floors and walls. Over time, the technique evolved, and more refined materials like glass and ceramic were used. Today, mosaics are still widely used in both artistic and functional design, adding visual interest and texture to surfaces.
