Toilet bowl triggers price war

In the ever-evolving home improvement market, the off-season has arrived after a busy period during the double tenth-year-old New Year's Day holiday. Amid this slowdown, the water-saving toilet segment has seen a surprising surge in demand. After visiting several major home stores in Guangzhou, reporters found that new national standards have triggered a wave of promotions, with water-saving toilets becoming a hot topic among consumers.
A staff member at a store in Tianhe said, "General models are being sold at least 70% off, and some are even 30% off. We also offer free installation." Following the New Year holidays, many stores have kept their promotional prices, allowing customers to benefit from significant discounts. For example, a four-generation water-saving toilet that originally cost around 2,000 RMB is now available for just 600 RMB. This kind of discount has attracted a lot of attention from buyers.
Kohler’s store reported selling 30 units of a special water-saving model per month, while TOTO and Dongpeng also saw strong sales. However, some consumers expressed surprise at how long these discounts have been maintained. A domestic brand manager explained that the replacement of old water-saving toilets has created a bit of a market imbalance. On one hand, the sluggish home market needs fresh products, but consumer demand hasn’t matched the supply. On the other hand, people often misinterpret environmental protection as simply buying a new product, which isn't always the case.
The current price cuts are mainly aimed at clearing inventory and making way for new generations of products. According to a survey by NetEase Home, toilets with a water displacement of 6 liters or more have already left the market. Now, the mainstream in Guangzhou is 6L or lower. Industry sources confirmed that since July last year, new national standards have forced older 8L and 9L models out of the market. Today, only 6L or less models are available, with some even reaching as low as 2.7L.
Toilets account for about 60-70% of household water usage, and flushing alone makes up over a third of total consumption. Reducing flush volume can significantly cut daily water use, especially with rising water prices fueling demand. Currently, 3L and 6L jet siphon-type water-saving toilets range in price from 900 to 7,000 RMB for first-tier brands, while imported ones are more expensive. Despite this, many domestic brands offer comparable quality and better after-sales service, making them more popular than imports.
However, not all so-called water-saving toilets are truly efficient. Some models may use less water per flush but require multiple flushes to clean properly, which ends up wasting more water. Experts advise consumers to focus on practicality rather than just the water-saving label. A qualified water-saving toilet should meet certain performance standards, including at least 2.5L of follow-up water for effective drainage.
Consumers should prioritize both performance and value. When choosing a toilet, it's important to look beyond the water-saving claim and consider real-world usability. For instance, someone might care most about quiet flushing, while others might prioritize design. As one homeowner put it, “The most important thing is that the toilet flushes well and doesn’t make too much noise.â€
To select a reliable water-saving toilet, experts recommend checking four key aspects: the ceramic body, glaze quality, water flow system, and testing the product in-store. A high-quality toilet will have a smooth, non-porous surface, durable construction, and a powerful flushing mechanism. Always take the time to test the toilet before purchasing to ensure it meets your needs.
