Photovoltaic product spot market prices soared

In the first week of the year, the photovoltaic spot market experienced a sharp surge in prices. This was mainly due to the end of the Lunar New Year holiday and the delayed implementation of China's dual-support policy. As a result, product prices have climbed significantly. The mainland market price has risen from $135 to $150 per unit. Some silicon wafer suppliers have started to increase their prices, with the average polysilicon wafer price now reaching around ¥6.1 per piece, while monocrystalline wafers are priced at approximately ¥8.1 per piece. Meanwhile, battery prices remain between ¥2.5 and ¥3.2 per unit. On a USD basis, the current spot price for silicon is still between $16.5 and $18 per kg. However, most of the supply comes from second- and third-tier manufacturers, with limited availability from top-tier producers. This week’s average price stood at $16.925 per kg, up slightly by 0.01%. In the silicon wafer segment, companies have been raising their quotes one after another, with some orders already fulfilled. The average price this week reached $0.854 per piece, an increase of 0.12%. For crystalline silicon wafers, improved demand has not been matched by full production recovery, pushing the average price to $1.18 per piece, up 0.17%. Battery prices continue to trend upward, with the average reaching $0.36 per Watt this week—a 0.28% increase. Module prices also saw a small rise, averaging $0.659 per Watt, up 0.3%. Beyond the rising solar prices, the industry is witnessing significant technological advancements. Industry experts note that both mainland China and Taiwan are actively competing in battery performance. Currently, the dominant technologies in the market are Double Printing and Selective Emitter. However, as demand for power generation per watt continues to decline, these mainstream technologies may struggle to meet efficiency expectations. As a result, there is growing interest in new innovations. Among the emerging solutions, MWT (Metal Wrap Through) technology stands out for its minimal disruption to existing manufacturing processes. It only requires adding a single station of equipment, increasing the active area and improving absolute conversion efficiency. Additionally, it helps reduce power loss in module packaging, which has seen cost reductions in recent years. This has made MWT a key focus for many manufacturers. According to EnergyTrend’s reports, some Chinese factories and Taiwanese plants have entered the pilot production phase for MWT technology, with mass production expected to begin in the second half of the year. Given that MWT requires coordination between battery and module industries, mainland Chinese manufacturers currently hold an advantage in large-scale production, potentially affecting the future competitiveness of Taiwanese firms in this space.
