Photovoltaic product spot market prices soared

The photovoltaic product spot market has experienced a sharp upward trend in prices during the first week of the year. This surge is primarily driven by the end of the Lunar New Year holiday and the delayed finalization of China’s dual-support policy. As a result, mainland market prices have climbed from $135 to $150. Several silicon wafer suppliers have started raising their prices, with the average price of polysilicon wafers reaching approximately RMB 6.1 per piece, while monocrystalline silicon wafers have risen to around RMB 8.1 per piece. Meanwhile, battery prices remain between RMB 2.5 and RMB 3.2. In terms of U.S. dollar quotes, the current spot price for polysilicon remains between $16.5 and $18 per kg. However, most of the available supply comes from second- and third-tier manufacturers, with limited availability from top-tier producers. This week’s average price stood at $16.925 per kg, reflecting a slight increase of 0.01%. In the silicon wafer segment, companies have gradually raised their quotes, and some orders have already been fulfilled. The average price for this week reached $0.854 per piece, up by 0.12%. For crystalline silicon wafers, although demand has improved, production capacity has not yet fully recovered, leading to an average price increase to $1.18 per piece, a rise of 0.17%. Battery prices continue to show a modest upward trend, with this week’s average reaching $0.36 per Watt, up 0.28%. Module prices also saw a small increase, averaging $0.659 per Watt, a growth of 0.3%. Beyond the rising solar prices, the industry has also seen notable technological advancements. Industry experts highlight that both mainland China and Taiwan are actively competing in battery performance. While Double Printing and Selective Emitter technologies remain dominant, the market's demand for power generation per watt continues to decline. These mainstream technologies may no longer be sufficient to meet growing efficiency demands. As a result, there is increasing interest in new technologies. Among them, MWT (Metal Wrap Through) technology stands out due to its minimal disruption to existing manufacturing processes. It requires only a single station upgrade in the production line, which enhances the surface active area and improves absolute conversion efficiency. Additionally, it helps reduce power loss in module packaging, further boosting performance. With the cost of module packaging declining in recent years, the overall production cost per watt has dropped significantly, making MWT technology a priority for many manufacturers. According to EnergyTrend, several Chinese and Taiwanese factories have entered the pilot run stage for MWT technology and are expected to begin mass production in the second half of the year. Given that MWT requires coordination between battery and module production, mainland Chinese manufacturers currently hold an advantage in large-scale implementation, potentially affecting the future competitiveness of Taiwanese producers.
