Wood floor cleaning and maintenance knowledge

Wood flooring can be quite expensive, and I wasn't aware of the proper maintenance techniques. I ended up cleaning it blindly, which caused damage to the floor. It was a costly mistake. I used water to wipe the floor, and after rubbing, it became dull and gray. After prolonged cleaning, the original finish got seriously damaged. Now, I'm really concerned about how to properly maintain my wooden floor.

How to clean wooden floors?

When cleaning your wooden floor, start by sweeping or using a dry mop to remove dust and debris. Then, mix a small amount of wood floor cleaner with water in a bucket, following the manufacturer's instructions based on the dirt level. Use a damp mop to go from the inside of the room toward the door, making sure to wring it out thoroughly to avoid excessive moisture. Too much water can seep into the wood, leading to warping, mold, or rot. For hard-to-reach areas like corners or seams, use an old toothbrush dipped in the cleaner or apply the solution to a cloth and gently wipe the area. Some cleaners have strong surfactants, so make sure to dry the floor well afterward to prevent dust buildup. Always choose a high-quality cleaner for best results.

If you want your floor to stay shiny and beautiful for longer, consider applying a thin layer of wood floor wax after cleaning. However, make sure the floor is completely dry before waxing. If you wax while it's still wet, the wax may not adhere properly, leaving white spots or uneven patches.

Maintaining wooden floors during the rainy season is especially important. High humidity and temperature can cause wood to expand or contract, leading to warping or gaps. In this season, it’s crucial to keep your floor dry and protected from moisture and pests. Many people focus only on the quality of the floor itself, but they often forget to check the wooden baseboards or joists. If the wood has a high moisture content or wasn’t treated properly, it could lead to infestations or structural issues. If you notice any signs of insect damage, treat the area immediately to prevent further damage.

Preventing and managing small cracks is also essential. Regular oiling and waxing help protect the floor from drying out and cracking. It also helps restore minor scratches and keep the surface looking fresh. When installing wooden flooring, make sure it's done at the end of your renovation project to avoid unnecessary scratches. After installation, apply a protective layer of wax or oil before walking on the floor to create a barrier against wear and tear. If you do scratch the floor, apply a small amount of wax to the affected area to smooth it out and maintain its appearance.
