Wood floor cleaning and maintenance knowledge

Wood flooring can be quite expensive, and I didn’t know much about its maintenance. I ended up cleaning it blindly, which caused damage to the floor. It was a costly mistake. I used water to wipe the floor, and after rubbing, it turned gray and dull. Over time, this even damaged the original finish of the floor. Now, maintaining wood flooring has become my top concern. Here are some things I’ve learned about how to properly clean and care for it:

How to Clean Wooden Floors?

When cleaning wooden floors, start by sweeping or using a dry mop to remove dust and debris. Then, mix the appropriate amount of floor cleaner with water in a bucket, depending on how dirty the floor is. Use a damp mop, starting from the inside of the room and moving towards the door. Be sure to wring out the mop thoroughly so that it’s only slightly damp—too much moisture can seep into the wood, causing warping, mold, or rot. For tough spots like corners or seams, use an old toothbrush dipped in the cleaner to scrub them gently. Alternatively, you can apply the cleaner directly onto a cloth and wipe the area. Some floor cleaners contain strong surfactants, which might leave a film if not rinsed properly. That’s why it’s better to choose a high-quality product.

If you want your floor to stay shiny for longer, consider applying a thin layer of wood floor wax after cleaning. However, make sure the floor is completely dry before waxing. If you apply wax too soon, it may not adhere properly and could leave white spots on the surface.

Maintaining Wood Floors During the Rainy Season

High humidity during the rainy season can cause wood floors to swell or warp. It's important to take extra precautions to keep your floor dry and protected. Make sure to control indoor humidity levels and avoid leaving wet items on the floor. In addition, regular inspections are essential to prevent moisture and insect damage.

I once found worms coming out of the floor, but it wasn't necessarily the floor's fault. Many people focus on the quality of the wood itself, but they often overlook the importance of the wooden base (keel). If the keel has too much moisture or wasn’t treated properly, it can lead to long-term issues. If you notice any signs of infestation, it's best to address it immediately to prevent further damage.

Preventing and Managing Small Cracks

To prevent dry cracks and maintain the beauty of your floor, regularly oil or wax it. This helps seal the wood and protect it from moisture loss. It's also important to install the wooden floor at the end of your renovation project to avoid scratches from other construction activities. After installation, apply a protective layer of wax or oil before walking on it. This creates a barrier that prevents scratches and keeps the floor looking new. If small scratches do appear, you can apply a little wax to fill them in and restore the floor's appearance.
