At 6:53 a.m. yesterday, the Fuzhou Public Security Fire Brigade received an urgent call about a fire breaking out in a student dormitory on the sixth floor of Zhicheng College, Fuzhou University, located at No. 50 Yangqiao West Road, Gulou District. Upon receiving the alarm, four fire trucks and over 20 firefighters rushed to the scene immediately to carry out rescue operations.
According to the on-site commander, the fire was intense, with visible flames and thick smoke pouring from the balcony. Firefighters quickly deployed a vertical water stream to the sixth-floor dormitory. Once they entered, they found the interior completely engulfed in flames, with parts of the ceiling and walls collapsed, and beds and wardrobes reduced to charred remains. “The temperature inside was extremely high; even through our protective gear, we could feel the intense heat,†one firefighter said.
Half an hour later, the fire was fully extinguished. After a thorough search, it was confirmed that no one was injured or killed.
However, the incident raised concerns about delayed response. According to school staff, the affected dormitory was a four-person room, and all students had left for winter vacation on the 16th. They were scheduled to return after the Lantern Festival. Therefore, the dorm was empty when the fire occurred.
Despite this, the fire spread rapidly once the fire department arrived. “Our team was closer to the campus and arrived first. We found several fire extinguishers at the door of the burning dormitory. According to the staff and security guards, they tried to put out the fire themselves initially but couldn’t control it before the firefighters arrived,†said the commander of the Shangpu Fire Squadron. He suggested that the school may have failed to detect the fire early, missing the best time for intervention.
Preliminary investigations by the Gulou District Fire Department indicated that the fire likely started due to an electrical short circuit. The fire burned approximately 15 square meters, and no students were present at the time. The investigation ruled out human-caused arson.
“Based on the evidence at the scene, there is a high likelihood that the fire originated from an electrical fault,†a firefighter explained.
Fire officials also advised the school to inspect adjacent dormitories. They found multiple electrical devices, including computers and lamps, still plugged in, and even some electric kettles left running. “Leaving these appliances powered on for extended periods can be dangerous. Issues like voltage fluctuations, leaks, short circuits, poor connections, or overheated wires could easily lead to fires if not detected in time,†they warned.
