Supermarket visit: genetically modified markers need to be standardized

According to Xinhua News Agency, on September 10th in Beijing, China has introduced a strict labeling system for genetically modified agricultural products. The system requires that any genetically modified organisms listed in the official catalog must be clearly labeled when sold in the market. However, reporters recently discovered inconsistencies in several large supermarkets in Beijing and Tianjin. They found cases where genetically modified products were either not labeled at all or had conflicting labels—some even avoided identification altogether. As a result, the current labeling system is still seen as incomplete and in need of improvement.
In the edible oil section of a supermarket, reporters observed that some well-known brands clearly indicated whether their products used genetically modified crops as raw materials. For instance, products made from non-GM crops prominently displayed the word “non-transgenic†on their packaging, making it easy for consumers to identify.
Soy products, in particular, have drawn significant consumer attention. At the supermarket, two popular soy milk brands and tofu and bean sprout products were labeled as using non-genetically modified soybeans. Similarly, Yashili and Yonghe branded soy milk powders also carried the “non-transgenic†label. However, canned tomato sauce with soybeans did not specify whether the soybeans or tomatoes used were genetically modified, leaving consumers in the dark.
When reporters visited the supermarket, they noticed that very few fresh produce items had any information about being genetically modified. This lack of transparency raises concerns among consumers who are increasingly aware of the potential risks associated with GM foods.
Qiu Baochang, an expert advisor and lawyer for the China Consumers Association, emphasized that food safety should be seamless and fully transparent. While the Ministry of Agriculture has established regulations, enforcement remains inconsistent. He pointed out that the issue now lies in who is responsible for ensuring compliance. Therefore, there is a pressing need for unified laws and regulations governing food safety, labeling, and standardization. Food recalls, supervision, and safety standards should all be enforced through clear legal frameworks. These regulations must be practical and implemented consistently across departments, rather than remaining fragmented rules that vary by region or agency.
