China's ash prevention strategy alliance officially announced in Beijing

On June 7, 2014, the "National Ash Prevention Strategy Alliance" (NSUH) was officially established in Beijing through the collaborative efforts of various sectors across society. The inaugural council meeting took place at the China World Hotel, marking a significant step forward in addressing environmental challenges, particularly air pollution. According to the results of an on-site election, Wang Yuqing, a former Deputy Director of the State Environmental Protection Administration and member of the 11th National Committee of the CPPCC, was appointed as the first chairman of the alliance. Wang Jiwei, former Vice Chairman of the All-China Women's Federation and a former leader of the Agricultural and Labour Party, became vice chairman and head of the expert advisory committee. Jiang Minglin, a State Council counselor, also joined as vice chairman, along with Liu Yanhua, former Vice Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology, and Shao Bingren, president of the China Equity Investment Fund Association. The alliance was formed with the aim of uniting experts, enterprises, and government bodies to tackle air pollution effectively. It emphasized the importance of non-profit operations, adherence to national laws, and the promotion of scientific and technological innovation for sustainable development. During the event, several key figures highlighted the necessity of the alliance in responding to the urgent environmental issues facing China, especially the rising levels of PM2.5 and other pollutants. Wang Yuqing stressed the need for collective effort and a lean, efficient model of operation. He urged the alliance to focus on serving its members and promoting environmental protection. Similarly, Wang Jiyu, another vice chairman, emphasized the importance of unity and shared responsibility, calling for a contemporary approach that would benefit future generations. Jiang Minglin pointed out the urgency of the situation, noting that only three cities met air quality standards in 2013. He praised the alliance’s initiative to use technology and information systems to improve air quality and promote international cooperation. Experts from various ministries, including the Ministry of Science and Technology and the Ministry of Environmental Protection, also contributed their insights, emphasizing the need for policy guidance, technological innovation, and collaboration between different sectors. Li Junyang, the secretary-general of the alliance, outlined the main directions of the alliance, including building a professional brand for ash prevention, publishing research reports, conducting urban assessments, and promoting cooperative technology alliances. The alliance also aims to establish an International Ash Prevention Forum to foster knowledge sharing and global cooperation. The conference brought together representatives from numerous organizations, including academic institutions, research centers, and private enterprises. A list of participants included members from the Tsinghua University Environmental College, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and international partners such as the Asian Development Bank and the US Energy Foundation. The official website of the alliance was also launched, offering access to policy databases, research reports, and city rankings related to air quality. This event marked a milestone in China’s environmental strategy, showcasing the power of collaboration and the importance of science-based solutions in combating pollution.
