The two-year implementation of the national standard for children's furniture is useless

On June 1st, Children's Day, retailers launched a new wave of promotions with "child-specific" gimmicks. In recent years, the safety and environmental standards of children's furniture have become a major concern for parents. On August 1, 2012, China introduced its first national mandatory standard for children's furniture, titled "General Technical Conditions for Children's Furniture." However, nearly two years after its implementation, a reporter from Sina Home visited a Guangzhou store and found that most sales staff had limited knowledge about the safety requirements outlined in the standard. One sales representative said, “I don’t know much about the environmental protection standards. It’s quite confusing.” On May 15th, the reporter visited three popular home furnishing stores in Guangzhou: Jisheng Weibang Panyu Store, Jisheng Weibang Pazhou Store, and Mahui Home Furnishing. At the Pazhou branch, the fourth floor featured a dedicated children's furniture section, showcasing brands like Songpu Kingdom, Duiai, Ximengbao, and Shiwei Pavilion. Many of these brands focused on solid wood furniture, such as pine wood, which is known for its low formaldehyde content and use of water-based paint. A brand representative explained, “Solid wood naturally has very low formaldehyde levels, and the surface coating is environmentally friendly, making it safer for children.” In addition to solid wood, some brands like INNAMORA Cradle, Douai, and Shiwei Pavilion also offered panel-based furniture. According to Miss Wang, a sales guide at INNAMORA Cradle, parents now prioritize safety over style when purchasing children's furniture. She claimed their products used E0-grade panels, which are nearly zero in formaldehyde emissions. However, many sales guides admitted they were not sure if E0-grade furniture existed on the market, noting that most products were labeled as E1-grade instead. Despite the existence of the national standard, many sales representatives lacked clear understanding of its details. One INNAMORA guide mentioned she had only been working there for three months and had no prior experience in the furniture industry, so she wasn't familiar with the regulations. Others knew of the standard but didn't understand its specifics. Experts emphasize that E1-grade panels are considered safe for children’s furniture. Luo Xin, executive deputy director of the National Furniture and Indoor Environmental Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, explained that the standard sets strict guidelines for structural safety and harmful substance limits. He noted that few companies currently use E0-grade materials due to higher costs and testing requirements. Consumers are advised to check product test reports and choose furniture with minimal bonding agents to reduce formaldehyde exposure. While the market for children's furniture is growing rapidly, experts warn that price doesn't always equate to quality. Some high-end items can cost tens of thousands of yuan, yet consumers should focus on material quality, safety standards, and practicality rather than just price. As one parent put it, “With only one child, it's worth spending more to ensure their safety.” However, industry experts recommend careful comparison of products before making a purchase.
