The two-year implementation of the national standard for children's furniture is useless

On Children's Day, June 1st, retailers launched a new wave of promotions with child-focused gimmicks. In recent years, the safety and environmental standards of children’s furniture have become a major concern for parents. In August 2012, China introduced its first national mandatory standard for children’s furniture, "General Technical Conditions for Children’s Furniture." Despite this regulation being in place for nearly two years, a recent investigation by a Sina home reporter found that many sales staff at Guangzhou stores had limited knowledge about the safety aspects outlined in the standard, leaving them confused.
One sales representative said, “I don’t even know what the national standard says about environmental protection.†On May 15th, the reporter visited three well-known furniture stores in Guangzhou: Jisheng Weibang Panyu, Jisheng Weibang Pazhou, and Mahui Home Furnishing. At the Jisheng Weibang Pazhou store, the fourth floor featured a children’s furniture section with brands like Songpu Kingdom, Duiai, Ximengbao, and Shiwei Pavilion. The products were mostly made of solid wood, such as pine, and the sales guide emphasized the low formaldehyde content and use of water-based paint, which they claimed made the furniture more environmentally friendly.
In addition to solid wood, some brands like INNAMORA Cradle, Douai, and Shiwei Pavilion offered panel-based furniture. According to Miss Wang, a sales guide at INNAMORA Cradle, parents now prioritize safety over style when purchasing children’s furniture. She claimed their products used E0-grade panels, which are nearly free of formaldehyde. However, many guides admitted they weren’t sure if E0-grade furniture was actually available on the market, stating that most products were E1-grade, which is less strict in terms of emissions.
Despite the existence of the national standard, many sales representatives lacked understanding of its details. One guide who had only been working at INNAMORA for a few months said she wasn’t familiar with the regulations. Others knew the standard existed but couldn’t explain it clearly.
Experts emphasize that E1-grade panels are commonly used and meet basic safety requirements. Luo Xin, executive deputy director of the National Furniture and Indoor Environmental Quality Supervision and Inspection Center, explained that the standard sets strict guidelines for structural safety and harmful substance limits for children aged 3 to 14. He noted that while E0-grade panels are ideal, they are not widely used due to higher costs and testing requirements. Consumers are advised to check test reports and opt for furniture with minimal binding agents to reduce formaldehyde levels.
The children’s furniture market is growing rapidly, driven by rising incomes and increasing parental investment in children’s well-being. Brands like Douai, Ximengbao, and Jin Fuya are gaining popularity, offering adjustable and multi-functional furniture that extends product lifespan. Prices vary significantly—some beds can cost up to 40,000 yuan, while others range from 3,000 to 5,000 yuan. Despite the wide price range, some parents still believe that spending more ensures better quality.
However, experts advise against blindly trusting price or sales representatives. Guangdong Decoration Association Secretary General Guo Shuang recommends comparing materials, safety standards, and practicality before making a purchase. Ultimately, choosing the right children’s furniture requires informed decision-making rather than relying solely on brand or price.
