Cultural stone is a versatile and durable material that offers a range of benefits, including a hard texture, vibrant colors, rich patterns, and various design styles. However, it may not be perfectly flat, which can limit its use for certain wall or interior applications. Natural cultural stone also boasts excellent properties such as high compressive strength, wear resistance, fire resistance, cold resistance, and low water absorption, making it ideal for both indoor and outdoor use. But how should you properly install cultural stone to ensure long-lasting beauty and durability?
The installation process involves several key steps to achieve the best results:
1. Prepare the surface by cleaning it thoroughly and creating a rough texture. If the surface is smooth and low-absorbent, like plastic wood, it’s essential to attach a wire mesh and create a rough base to ensure proper adhesion.
2. Before placing the stone, arrange the pieces on a flat surface to determine the best layout and visual effect. Avoid placing stones with similar sizes, shapes, and colors next to each other. Follow the correct order: cement layer, cultural stone layer, and then the joint filler layer.
3. Use white cement with a grade above 425, ordinary cement mixed in a ratio of 1:2:0.03 (cement:sand:801 glue), ceramic adhesive, or high-performance special adhesive as the bonding agent. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions when using adhesives. The application order should be: culture stone → cement slurry (to enhance bond strength) → adhesive.
4. Ensure the stone is fully soaked before installation. Apply the adhesive in a mountain-shaped pattern on the bottom of the stone. For antique bricks, a thin layer of adhesive can be applied to the back. If the surface gets dirty during installation, clean it immediately with a brush.
5. Start by attaching the corner pieces first. Press them firmly to ensure the adhesive spreads evenly around the edges. Some products may not require corners, so check the specifications.
6. If needed, cut the stones to adjust their size and fit them into the desired space.
7. Fill the gaps between the stones using plastic bags or similar tools. Pay attention to the depth of the joints—deeper gaps can enhance the three-dimensional appearance of the finished look.
8. After the caulk has partially dried, remove any excess material using bamboo sticks or similar tools. Clean the surface with a brush and water to even out the joints. If small amounts of caulk or adhesive remain on the stone, let them dry and then gently brush them off. Some products may not require sealing at all.
9. When installing cultural stone outdoors, allow one week for the stones and caulk to fully dry before applying a protective coating. This can include waterproofing, anti-UV, anti-freeze, and anti-alkali treatments to extend the lifespan of the installation.
10. Seaming requirements vary depending on the type of stone:
(1) Fractal rock: The minimum gap should be about 10mm. Adjust the differences in irregular shapes using the caulk.
(2) Antique bricks: A standard gap of 10mm is recommended. Use a comb-type trowel when applying cement slurry on the wall to improve the bond between the stone and the surface.
