Car brands reflect different values, such as efficiency, luxury, speed, and performance. Donkervoort Automobielen BV, a renowned Dutch car manufacturer, is known for crafting high-performance sports cars that blend craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology. To achieve perfection in their designs, the company relies on SolidWorks' advanced 3D design and simulation tools, which play a crucial role in the development of their iconic models.
By integrating SolidWorks Flow Simulation and SolidWorks Simulation Premium into their existing design workflow, Donkervoort created a unified CAD environment to completely redesign the classic D8GTO. This approach ensured seamless integration between design and verification, streamlining the entire process.
Donkervoort specializes in producing handcrafted, lightweight sports cars that deliver F1-level performance. To enhance power, the company redesigned the D8GTO’s engine, which increased the vehicle's weight and required a complete body redesign. To maintain performance while keeping costs under control and meeting deadlines, they turned to SolidWorks’ fluid dynamics and structural analysis tools.
During the redesign, Donkervoort faced several challenges, including optimizing the intake manifold, improving airflow, and refining open-wheel aerodynamics. To reduce weight while increasing strength and rigidity, they opted for a carbon fiber-reinforced steel pipe frame. Additionally, they added rear fender wings to boost downforce and stability.
According to Stephen Endersby, a product manager at Dassault SolidWorks, Donkervoort’s ability to innovate and solve complex design problems aligns perfectly with what SolidWorks was built to support. By simulating real-world conditions, the team avoided costly and time-consuming physical prototypes. As a result, they reduced the number of required physical tests by 50%, improved aerodynamics and performance, and introduced new structural innovations to sports car design.
Jordi Wiersma, Donkervoort’s engineering design director, explained: “We chose SolidWorks Simulation because it met all our simulation needs. CAD integration is essential. We previously worked with external consultants using other tools, but we spent more time integrating their results into our systems than actually analyzing them.â€
Working within a single CAD environment allowed Donkervoort to use simulation tools more efficiently, applying the results directly to their design concepts in real-time. This streamlined process significantly enhanced productivity and innovation in their design workflow.
