The European Parliament recently passed a significant resolution, with 539 votes in favor and 51 against, mandating that EU member states cut the use of plastic bags by at least 80% by 2019. The new rules aim to eliminate the free distribution of plastic bags in supermarkets and other retail outlets. This move is part of a broader effort to reduce environmental pollution caused by single-use plastics.
The Parliament also plans to review and update the packaging regulations that have been in place since 1994 during its next session. The goal is to implement stricter measures to significantly reduce plastic bag consumption over the next five years. In addition to banning the free supply of plastic bags, the legislation will prohibit their use for items such as meat, fish, or dairy products. Starting from 2019, even fruit and vegetable bags must be made from recyclable or biodegradable materials.
According to data from the European Parliament, each citizen in the EU uses approximately 200 plastic bags annually, with nearly 90% of them being used only once before being discarded. Every year, around 800 million plastic bags end up as waste, some of which find their way into oceans, causing serious harm to marine life and ecosystems. This regulation is a crucial step toward a more sustainable future and highlights the growing awareness of environmental responsibility across Europe.
