The European Parliament recently approved a significant environmental initiative, passing a vote of 539 to 51, which mandates that EU member states cut the use of plastic bags by at least 80% by 2019. The new law aims to drastically reduce single-use plastics by banning supermarkets and other retailers from providing free plastic bags to consumers. This move is part of a broader effort to combat plastic pollution and promote more sustainable consumption habits across Europe.
The legislation also calls for a revision of packaging regulations first introduced in 1994, with the goal of encouraging the use of eco-friendly alternatives. In addition to restricting the distribution of plastic bags, the Parliament requires member states to implement measures that will significantly lower overall plastic usage within five years. Starting in 2019, even fruit and vegetable bags must be replaced with recyclable or biodegradable paper options.
According to data from the European Parliament, each European citizen uses an average of 200 plastic bags annually, with nearly 90% of them being used only once before being discarded. This staggering amount leads to approximately 800 million plastic bags becoming waste every year, many of which end up in oceans, contributing to severe environmental damage. By implementing these strict regulations, the EU hopes to set a global example in the fight against plastic pollution and encourage a shift toward more responsible consumer behavior.
