SolidWorks Simulation helps world-class sports car manufacturers improve

Car brands often symbolize different values—efficiency, luxury, speed, and performance. Donkervoort Automobielen BV, a renowned Dutch car manufacturer, is dedicated to crafting high-performance sports cars that combine craftsmanship, lightness, and Formula 1-level power. To achieve this, the company relies on advanced tools like SolidWorks, which provides powerful 3D design and simulation solutions that support their pursuit of perfection. By integrating SolidWorks Flow Simulation and SolidWorks Simulation Premium into their existing design workflow, Donkervoort created a unified CAD environment for the complete redesign of the classic D8GTO model. This approach ensured seamless integration between design and verification, allowing the team to streamline their development process. The D8GTO project involved significant modifications, including a redesigned engine that increased weight and required a new body structure. To maintain performance while managing costs and meeting deadlines, Donkervoort turned to SolidWorks’ fluid dynamics and structural analysis tools. These technologies helped them optimize aerodynamics, reduce weight, and enhance strength without compromising on quality or performance. During the redesign, the team faced several challenges, such as optimizing the intake manifold, improving airflow, and refining open-wheel aerodynamics. To address these issues, they used a carbon fiber-reinforced steel pipe frame, which provided high strength while keeping the vehicle lightweight. Additionally, they added rear wing structures to increase downforce and improve handling. According to Stephen Endersby, Simulation product manager at Dassault Systèmes, Donkervoort’s ability to innovate and solve complex design problems aligns perfectly with the core capabilities of SolidWorks. By simulating real-world conditions, the team was able to avoid costly and time-consuming physical prototypes, resulting in a more refined and high-performing vehicle. “We chose SolidWorks Simulation because it met all our needs,” said Jordi Wiersma, Director of Engineering Design at Donkervoort. “CAD integration is essential. We previously worked with external consultants using other tools, but we found that integrating their results into our system took more time than the actual analysis.” Working within a single CAD environment allowed Donkervoort to use simulation tools more efficiently. They could apply the results directly to their design concepts during the development phase, significantly improving productivity and accuracy. As a result, the number of physical prototypes needed was reduced by 50%, and the final product became more sophisticated, with enhanced aerodynamics and performance.
