Specific method of installing cultural stone
Cultural stone is a popular choice for both indoor and outdoor decoration due to its durability, vibrant colors, and unique textures. It offers a natural aesthetic with a variety of styles to suit different design preferences. However, it’s important to note that cultural stone isn’t perfectly flat, which makes it unsuitable for certain applications like smooth wall coverings. Additionally, this material is known for its resistance to compression, wear, fire, cold, and corrosion, as well as its low water absorption rate.
So, how do you install cultural stone properly? Here's a step-by-step guide to help you achieve the best results:
1. Prepare the surface by cleaning it thoroughly and making it rough if needed. If you're working on a low-absorbency or smooth surface like plastic wood, it's recommended to install a wire mesh first to ensure better adhesion.
2. Before placing the stones, arrange them on the ground to determine the best layout and visual effect. Avoid placing similar-sized, shaped, or colored stones next to each other. The installation order should be: cement layer, cultural stone layer, and finally the cement joint layer.
3. Use high-quality white cement (above 425) or ordinary cement mixed with sand and 801 glue in a ratio of 1:2:0.03. Alternatively, you can use ceramic adhesive or high-performance special adhesives. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions. The bonding sequence should be: apply cement to increase bond strength, then apply the adhesive before placing the stone.
4. Ensure the stone is fully soaked before applying adhesive. Spread the adhesive in a mountain-like shape on the bottom of the stone. For antique bricks, a thin layer of adhesive on the bottom is sufficient. If the surface gets dirty, clean it immediately with a brush.
5. Start by attaching the corner pieces, pressing them firmly so that the adhesive extrudes around the edges. Some products may not require corners, so check the specifications.
6. If necessary, cut the stones to fit the space and adjust the layout accordingly.
7. Fill the gaps using plastic bags or similar tools. Be careful with the depth—deeper gaps enhance the three-dimensional appearance of the stone.
8. Once the caulk has set, remove any excess with bamboo sticks or similar tools. Clean the joints with a brush and water. If any caulk or adhesive remains on the stone surface, let it dry and then gently brush it off. Some products may not require sealing at all.
9. When installing cultural stone outdoors, allow it to cure for at least one week after laying. Once fully dry, apply a protective coating such as waterproofing, anti-UV, anti-freeze, or alkali-resistant treatments to prolong its lifespan.
10. Seaming requirements vary depending on the type of stone:
(1) Fractal rock: The minimum gap should be about 10mm. Adjust size differences using the caulk.
(2) Antique bricks: A standard gap of 10mm is recommended. Use a comb-type trowel when applying cement slurry on vertical surfaces to improve bonding strength between the stone and the wall.
