Different layers of solid wood flooring maintenance

Solid wood floor paint film refers to the protective layer applied on the surface of solid wood flooring. This coating offers properties such as water resistance, heat resistance, and corrosion resistance. Proper maintenance is essential to preserve the appearance and longevity of the floor. However, since different types of paint films are used on solid wood floors, the maintenance approach varies accordingly.

Nitro Wood Varnish Floor

This type of finish is created through polishing and rubbing, but it has limited water resistance. Therefore, it should not be wiped with a damp cloth or water, as this can cause dullness or peeling. To maintain its shine, apply wax every six months or so, then buff it with a clean cotton cloth. For regular cleaning, use a soft towel or cotton yarn to remove dust. While nitro varnish is resistant to heat and chemicals, it’s important to avoid direct sunlight and smoke exposure to prevent damage.

Wide Paint and Lacquered Floor

These high-quality coatings offer excellent water and heat resistance, along with natural aesthetics. They have the ability to darken or lighten over time, allowing the original wood tone to gradually return. These floors are best maintained by frequent light wiping with a damp cloth, avoiding harsh chemicals or excessive moisture.

Polyurethane Lacquered Floor

Polyurethane finishes are known for their strong resistance to heat, corrosion, and acid. Their maintenance is similar to that of nitro varnish floors, but they should never be cleaned with water, as this can lead to oil buildup and reduce the gloss. Regular dry wiping is recommended to keep the surface looking its best.

Alkyd Varnish Floor

Alkyd varnish is considered one of the most durable options available. It can be cleaned with a slightly damp cloth or soft towel without causing damage. However, it is sensitive to heat, so hot objects should not be placed directly on the floor. Avoid covering the surface with plastic sheets or paper, as this can trap moisture and cause discoloration.

In addition to these specific care methods, general maintenance tips include avoiding scratches from heavy metal objects, glass, or sharp items. When moving furniture, lift it rather than dragging it across the floor. Never place cigarette butts directly on the surface, nor do you place acidic or alkaline substances on it. Also, avoid placing hot items like kettles or stoves directly on the floor to prevent burns or warping.

Over time, even well-maintained wooden floors may show signs of wear. If the floor becomes old, it's advisable to repaint it. There are two main lacquering methods. The first involves applying a new coat of paint and color, similar to how wood furniture is treated. After drying, apply floor wax evenly, not too thick, and wipe it with a mop until the surface shines. The second method doesn’t require coloring—just apply wax directly to the floor. Since wood is a natural material, it ages beautifully over time, becoming smoother and more radiant, especially when waxed. A waxed wood floor will eventually become extra shiny, smooth, and visually appealing.
