How to identify the quality of the hardware door lock material
If the door lock is made of zinc alloy, it has poor hardness and rust resistance. Thick plating can easily fade, turn black, or even blister and rot over time. However, one of its advantages is that it's easy to create complex shapes, especially through pressure casting. Many locks in the market with intricate designs are likely made from zinc alloy, so consumers should be cautious and check carefully before purchasing.
Steel offers good strength and low cost, but it is prone to rusting. It is typically used for internal structural parts of a lock rather than external decorative components, as it may not withstand outdoor conditions well.
Aluminum or aluminum alloys are lightweight and easy to shape, but standard aluminum alloys (excluding aerospace-grade ones) tend to be softer and have lower material strength. This makes them suitable for applications where weight is a concern, but not for high-stress areas.
Copper is one of the most commonly used materials for door locks. It offers excellent mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, and ease of processing, along with an attractive appearance. Copper-forged handles and other lock components often have a smooth surface, high density, and no air holes or sand pits. They are both durable and resistant to rust, making them ideal for various surface treatments like gold plating. These finishes give the locks a luxurious, elegant look, adding style and sophistication to any home.
From a durability standpoint, stainless steel is considered the best material, especially when used as a surface finish. The brighter the finish, the better it tends to hold up over time. Stainless steel provides excellent strength, strong corrosion resistance, and maintains its color without fading. However, there are different types of stainless steel, mainly classified into ferritic and austenitic grades. Ferritic stainless steel is magnetic and commonly referred to as "stainless steel," but it can still rust if exposed to unfavorable environments over time. Among all types, 304 stainless steel is currently regarded as the highest quality option available.
